How to Change a Honda Key Battery

Luckily, the process of opening up your Honda key fob to replace the battery is relatively straightforward, as long as you follow the correct steps. What is the Honda Key Battery Type?

The first thing you’ll need to do–ideally, before your Honda key fob battery runs out–is get ahold of a replacement battery or batteries. Luckily, you’ll be able to find a Honda key battery in just about any hardware or electronics store around Midland and beyond–most Honda key fobs use a flat circular 3-volt battery. How to Open the Honda Key Fob

The next step of the battery replacement process is to open up the Honda key fob. This is an easy process, but you want to stick to the steps below so you don’t accidentally damage the fob. Here’s what to do:

• Locate the button to release the metal key inside the fob. Slide that button open and pull the metal key out. 
• Carefully place the edge of the key into the slot at the top of the key fob. Wedge the key and lightly twist. The back of the key fob should pop off and reveal the battery.

How to Change the Battery in a Honda Key Fob

Now that the key fob is open, you should see the battery. However, you want to avoid simply pulling the battery out, since this could cause other essential parts of the key fob to fall apart. Instead, follow these steps:

• Hold your thumb right above where the battery is located.
• Using your other hand, carefully pry the dead battery out and replace it with a fresh one.
• Line the back of the key fob up with the front half, gently press the pieces back together. Once secured, you will hear a snap.

How to Program the Honda Key

If you need to know how to program a Honda key, it’s easy! There are a few straightforward steps to follow and you’ll be all set. Here’s what to do:

1. Enter your Honda cabin and make sure all the doors are shut. Have your key and/or key fob on hand.
2. Insert the key into the ignition and turn to the “On” position. Press and hold the “LOCK” button for one second. 
3. Release the button and turn the key around to the “Off” position. Repeat this process twice more.
4. Turn the key to the “On” position and hold the “LOCK” button on the key fob for one second. Wait for the doors to lock and unlock automatically. Once the locks have cycled, your vehicle is in remote programming mode.
5. Once again hold the “LOCK” button for one second. Once the locks cycle, the key fob has been successfully paired with your vehicle. Repeat the process with any additional fobs that need programming. 
6. Exit remote programming mode by turning the key to the “Off” position in the ignition.
