How to Check Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid Change

How often do you check your transmission fluid? A low fluid level can cause serious problems in your transmission. So, if your car doesn’t shift smoothly from one gear to another anymore, it may be time to check. Our service department would be happy to check it for you. However, a lot of our San Angelo area customers do it themselves. If this sounds like something you want to tackle yourself, we’ve got you covered. We explain below how to check your transmission fluid, step-by-step.

How to Check Your Transmission Fluid – Automatic Transmission

You will need to check the transmission fluid while the engine is running and already warm. Follow these steps:

  • Locate the correct dipstick (towards the back of the engine on rear-wheel drives, towards the front otherwise). If your automatic transmission doesn’t have a dipstick, it is likely a sealed system and you should schedule an appointment with us to check the fluid level.
  • Look at the fluid that is on the dipstick, and make sure that it is pink, and doesn’t have flecks of metal in it. If it looks dirty, you will need to have the fluid changed.
  • Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it.
  • Take the dipstick back out and check the level.
  • If the level is low, use a funnel and top off the fluid through the dipstick tube (don’t overfill).

How to Check Your Transmission Fluid – Manual Transmission

Your car will need to be lifted and secured on jack stands or a hoist. Never get under your car when it is only on jacks!

  • Locate the fluid fill plug. It is usually half-way up the side of the transmission.
  • Unscrew the plug.
  • Stick your finger in the plug hole. Examine the fluid on your finger. If it looks dirty (not pink), it is time to change your fluid.
  • If you can’t feel fluid, then top off the fluid through the hole.
